1920 Alva - City Federation of Women's Clubs

The City Federation of Women's Clubs was organized in Alva several years ago (before last March, 1920). During the period of war the members gave their time to Red Cross and other war work, so that the club was allowed to lapse, and was reorganized last March, 1919.

In the federation were the Twentieth Century, Poinsettia, New Era, Thimble, Delphian, Chapter C of P. E.O., and the Jolly Neighbors. The club had accomplished much for the good of Alva, and many interesting plans were being made for the future, among these were a boys' club along with a Y.M.C.A. The club maintained the city library, hiring a librarian and buying new books. Last year the organization assisted in beautifying the town and especially the park, which was in the center of the square which makes up Alva's business district. A fountain was erected in the park, and flowers and grass planted. For a time the club conducted a Rest Room (link leads to the guestbook) for visitors and especially for the rural residents, but this had recently been discontinued. The club had also given its attention to securing a high class of moving pictures to be shown there.

Last Thursday evening, under their auspices of the city federation and for the benefit of the library, was presented the comedy, "Officer 666." Mrs. S. C. Percival, head of the dramatic department of the Northwestern State Normal, was in charge, and the cast of characters included some of the best talent from the college and the city.

Officers of the Federation were: Mrs. G. M. Lish, president; Mrs. H. A. Matteson, vice president; Mrs. A. W. Kavanaugh, secretary; Mrs. D. R. Frazier, treasurer.
