Walking With Sadie

One of our "OkieLegacy" readers recently asked about a Bohemian who was lynched on 29 September 1893 (12 days after the Land Run of 1893) in Alva, Oklahoma Territory. So . . . we went searching the old newspaper archives to see what we could find out about this alleged Bohemian in Northwest Oklahoma Territory.

1893, Gang of Drunken Desperadoes Visit Enid (OK)

n 10 November 1893, The Guthrie Daily Leader, reported that a gang of drunken desperadoes visited the town of Enid, Oklahoma Territory, and terrorized women and children and drove them from their claims. And there was almost a lynching that was swiftly aborted.

1893 - Angry Settlers & Alva Lynching

Back in 1893, during the homesteading of Northwest Oklahoma Territory, there were angry settlers, who fought for the possession of a quarter section. As The Guthrie Daily Leader, 1 October 1893, reported on page three, two men were shot and killed and a mob of angry settlers lynched a homesteader near Alva.

Pete Seeger (May 3, 1919-Jan. 27, 2014) introduced America to its own folk heritage, getting a whole generation passionate about playing the guitar, picking the banjo, and got them singing together and using music as a force for social change. Seeger talks about the history of We Shall Overcome in a conversation with Tim Robbins in 2006.

Newport Folk Festival (1959-1965)

The Newport Folk Festival was an American annual folk-oriented music festival in Newport, Rhode Island, which began in 1959 as a counterpart to the previously established Newport Jazz Festival. The festival featured performances by folk, blues, country, bluegrass and folk rock musicians, and since the 1990s has featured performers from related contemporary genres, such as alternative country, indie folk and folk punk.

Cherokee Strip Land Run (1893 Sep. 16)

Through a bit of research, we find that by the time of the Oklahoma land rush of 1893, America was in the grip of the worst economic depression it had ever experienced. This was one of the factors that swelled the number of expectant land seeker that day.

Pete Seeger (3 May 1919-27 January 2014): Power of Song

In the 94 years of his life, Pete Seeger was a musician, activist and a Patriotic American icon. He got us all singing and strumming together in the Power of Song. His performances touched millions for more than seven decades. Some called him a saint, and others said, "We all owe our careers to him."

It was all about the tradition of singing out for social change, and how the music of the Civil Rights, anti-war, Peace and environmental movements galvanized Seeger's life and America's life. We all have our favorite songs. What is yours?
