NW Okie's Journey
The first week of the last month of 2015, we have decided to do some genealogy work on my mother's (Vada Paris Mcgill) PARIS/CONOVER lineage on our account at ancestry.com: parsitimes. We are starting with the CONOVER-COUWENHOVEN side of our maternal family tree going back to the 17th century to my 9th great-grandfather, Wolfert Gerritsen Van Kouwenoven. Walking With Sweet Silly Sadie (Dawg)
NW Okie has always wanted to spend some time exploring the settlement area of her Couwenhoven (Conover, Kouwenhoven) in the New York area near Flatbush, Manhattan and up towards Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow). Time has no doubtedly changed the areas from what it was in the 17th century with the settlement of the Dutch West India Company, to the present day status of NYC. Thank goodness for the online media for being able to search for the histories and legacy of that time period. Is It Conover Or Kouwenhoven?
While searching and researching our ancestry on my mother's side of the family of CONOVERs, we found this 1920 article in The El Paso Herald, dated 13 Nov. 1920, Saturday, page 31, concerning the family name of CONOVER: "Is It Conover?" Wolfers Gerretsen Van Kouwenhoven was this NW Okie's 9th Great Grandfather. 1887 - The Old Flatbush Road (Breukelen)
In The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Brooklyn, New York, dated 13 Nov. 1887, Sunday, page 6, we found this article concerning "The Old Flatbush Road," where Jan Evertse Bout established himself in 1645. 1909 - Mrs. G. W. Conover dead at 67 Years
It was in the Trenton Evening Times, Trenton, New Jersey, dated 13 September 1909, Monday, page 13, that we found this obituary for Mrs. Nellie H. Conover, wife of George W. Conover: "Mrs. G. W. Conover Dead At 67 Years." Great Grandfather was early settler in New Jersey. 1912 - Frank D. Kouwenhoven Obituary
The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Brooklyn, New York, dated 22 January 1912, Monday, page 18, reported this death of "Frank D. Kouwenhoven Dead." He was of a family who settled in Flatlands in the 17th century. William Mcgill (1904) & Sunday Baseball Law (1907)
Here is a small sports article about this NW Okie's grandpa, William Mcgill, that appeared in The Wichita Daily Eagle, Wichita, Kansas, dated 4 December 1904, Sunday, Page 14: "Wichita Colleges, At Friends University." 1890 - The Benson Homestead, An Old Flatbush NY Mansion
In The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Brooklyn, New York, dated 18 May 1890, Sunday, page 13, we found this mention of the Benson Homestead which was built by Nicholas Couwenhoven over a hundred years ago (1790) - The family that had occupied it for generations.
