On this day in history, October 17, 1931, mobster Al Capone was convicted of income tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in prison. Capone was found guilty of 23 counts contained in two indictments brought against by the Federal Government for income tax evasion from 1924 to 1929. He was released in 1939. According to the "Chester (Oklahoma) Centennial 1895-1995" compiled in April 1995, the beginning of the current postal system started on the East Coast in the late 1600's. It was another fifty (50) years before postal service reached the South.
