NW Okie's Journey

It has dawned on me that dragging this old body along the mountain trails has a relaxing, tension-free exercise to keep mobility in these old bones. We have been doing our two-mile walking at a steady, speedy pace for the whole week and last few weeks. Last week we shared a video of our chosen mountain walking trail around the Vallecito campground.

Walking With Sadie

NW Okie left this Sadie Pug at home Friday evening while they went to ride the Durango-Silverton narrow-gauge Blues Train from Durango to Rockwood and back again to Durango (7pm-10:30pm, Friday, 22 August 2014). Sounds like a fun, great outing (No Dogs Allowed). See the snippet video below with images.

100 Years Ago, Tuesday, 25 August 1914

It was Tuesday, 25 August 1914, and the Battle of Mons was the British Expeditionary Force first battle. The first reports of the Army's first major encounter in the Daily Telegraph on that day, one hundred years ago, stated that the British troops in Belgium took an active and meritorious part in the great battle which began on that Saturday and was still continuing.

1914, August 25, Musicians At the Front

A day or two before 25 August 1914, The Daily Telegraph stated that the eminent Russian composer and pianist, Rachmaninoff, had gone to the front. Among many other foreign musicians who had exchanged the music of peace for that of war were Chaliapin, the Russian singer, whose art, was shown in the last two seasons of Russian opera at Drury Lane, created furore.

Warwick, Gwin, Hull and Eckard Relations

I recently gathered some old family photos my Warwick, Gwin, Hohl (Hull) and Eckard relations that lived in the vicinity of Monterey, Vanderpoole and Mountain Grove, Virginia. I have put them on my Facebook page in a photo album entitled Monterey Virginia.

Check them out below and see if any are related to your ancestors. My dad (Gene McGill) is the young boy, seated on porch, third from left. I believe it was taken in the 1920s when my grandmother (Constance Estella Warwick McGill) was doing her research for her DAR for Capt. David Gwin. Anyway . . . Grandmother got her DAR papers around 1925. Besides the Facebook album (Monterey Virginia), you can see more Warwick-Gwin photographs at Paristimes Pioneers (Warwick Album).
