NW Okie's Journey

We are reaching the last week of May 2014 and will be entering June 2014. This last Saturday we find that Silverton, Colorado got 3 to 4 inches of snow, which shortened the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic from Durango to Silverton. This year they only went to Purgatory ski resort and back. While the higher elevations were getting snow, we were experience chilly, cloudy and rainy weather.

Walking With Sadie

Our Hummingbird feeders and one free-loading Finch have been very popular the last few days. Especially during the chilly, cloudy and rainy climate. It seems like they go through the sweet, energy nectar really fast, causing us to refill more often during the day.

Haunted Butcher Shop (Alva, OK)

This haunted butcher who story takes place in Alva, Oklahoma with Bill Sholtz, a butcher who had a shop near Snyder's dry goods store. One day Bill, having done all of the butchering for the community that he deemed necessary, decided he would try it on himself, and back of a big, tall ice box reaching to the ceiling in the middle of the room, he rigged up a rope, putting it about his neck, and swung himself off. His swinging body was discovered and he was cut down, but too late to save his life.

One hundred years ago, 26 May 1914, Tuesday, The Ardmoreite front page headlines had an article entitled, "Wilson And Teddy Hold Conference." Col. roosevelt would spend the day in Washington and meet the leaders.

Brown v. Topeka Board of Education

60 years ago Supreme Court ruling outlawed school segregation in America. The Brown v. Board of Education was a consolidation of several different cases from Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia and Delaware. Several black children through their legal representatives sought admission to public schools that required or permitted segregation based on race. The plaintiffs alleged that segregation was unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Parade of Suffragists 24 October 1915

It was in The Sun, Sunday, 24 October 1915, in New York, that we found this front page article, "25,000 Get in Line for Parade of Suffragists in Face of a Biting Wind." Thousands of others waited for places but were kept from marching, grandmothers played prominent parts. The Mayor reviewed the stirring spectacle.
