History of Mother's Day In America

Mother's Day was originally suggested by poet and abolitionist activist Julia Ward Howe, in 1870, after witnessing the carnage of the Civil War and start of the Franco-Prussian War. Howe wrote the original Mother's Day Proclamation calling women of the world to unite for peace. It planted a seed to what would eventually become a national holiday.

100 Years Ago - Tuesday 12 May 1914

It was in the Anadarko, Oklahoma newspaper The Daily Democrat, dated Tuesday, 12 May 1914, we found this front page article entitled Locates Son After years. It is about a mother's yearning for her son she had not seen for fourteen years.

Julia Ward Howe (27 May 1819-17 Oct 1910)

It was in the Goodwin's Weekly, dated 2 February 1907, page 2, that Thomas Wentworth Higginson wrote most interestingly of Julia Ward Howe. Higginson had an intimate friendship with Julia Ward Howe for some forty years, as he tells just how she has seemed to be through all those years.
