1920 - An Old Soldier Mustered Out...
[Taken from January 2, 1920, Renfrew's Record, frontpage.] -- Dorsey B. Stone, a Union soldier of the Civil War, died at the National Military Home, near Leavenworth, Kansas, on Christmas Eve, 1919. Mr. Stone had been in failing health for several years, and had spent the most of the time the last two or three years at the Home.
Dorsey B. Stone was born in Grayson County, Kentucky, June 22, 1835. Early in the Civil War he enlisted, January 1st, 1862, at Grayson's Springs, Ky., in Co. I, 27th Ky. Inf. The prinicpal battles in which he participated was during the Atlanta campaign and he was in the siege of Knoxville. He was not wounded but was deafened by a shell in the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, which affected his hearing the rest of his life. He was honorably discharged, March 28, 1865. Mr. Stone came to Harper, Kansas, in 1892, and to the Strip, locating in Grant county in 1893 In 1901 he came to Alva which has since been his home. He leaves a son, Daniel Stone, who lives in this city. Mr. Stone was 84 years, 6 months and 2 days old at the time of his death, and was laid to rest in the National cemetery, near Leavenworth, Kansas, on December 27, 1919. He was a highly respected citizen and had many friends."
