Remembering back through the ages, to September 16, 1776, when a detachment of Continental troops ambushed on the cliff overlooking the valley of the Harlem River, almost decimated a larger body of troops from British General Braddock's army, driving them back to their forts on what was Morningside Heights.

It was in the Poughkeepsie Eagle-News, in Poughkeepsie New York, that we found this article, dated 17 September 1896, Thursday, page 2, "Battle of Harlem Heights." The were celebrating the 120th anniversary of the battle of Harlem Heights, which occurred 16 September 1776.
As we said earlier it was a small detachment of Continental troops ambushed on the cliff overlooking the valley of the Harlem River, almost decimating a larger body of troops from British General Braddock's army, driving them back to their forts on what was then Morningside Heights.
Did you know that after the Battle of Harlem Heights, Westchester was for some months the principal theatre of conflict in America. Five miles from New York, at White Plains, one of the severest battles of the war was fought, in which the British were partially defeated.
They said in 1844 newspaper article, the country through which the road passes, after crossing the Harlem river, is of the most picturesque and delightful character. The district around the present terminus of the road, was classic ground in American story. There was much sharp skirmishing and some hard fighting in its vicinity, at the beginning of the revolution, between the army under Washington and the British forces.
