Menacing Marauding Mosquitoes (Soggy Daze of Summer)
It was on a Thursday, July 15, 1999, NW Okie wrote this piece, "Menacing Marauding Mosquitoes (Soggy Daze of Summer)," because of the wet soppy, soggy weather we were having.
Beware! the menacing marauding mosquitoes are on the warpath and could be striking in your communities this Summer. they've been spotted recently in the rural communities of northwest Oklahoma.
One of my readers from the northwest part had this comment about that, "I think this year may be the year of the mosquito instead of the grasshopper..With all the rain...Glad it's drying out."
This last weekend boosted a population explosion of phnomenal proportions for some small farm communities in northwest Oklahoma. Crowds of Oklahomans flocked in droves to the small town o f Dacoma (aka Dakoma) for their "3rd of July Annual (Pre Independence Day) Blowout" held and sponsored by the Volunteer Fire Department & Dacoma Citiazens.
The warm blood of the humans and their families came in droves by way of autos lining both sides of the small gravel streets. Swarming, gathering and staking out their particular picnic places in Dakoma's Downtown Park.
I say half-unexpected, because little did the mosquitoes realize that the humans had come partially prepared with their cans of "OFF" and "What-Have-You-Remedies" to protect themselves from pesky parasites that lurk in the evening shade waiting to bite, suck and leave little, itchy bumps.
The pesky parasites have traveled to this northwest area because of an over abundance of rainfall that we have received since the start of the early spring and summer months and the mild winter.
The Mosquitoes (too numerous to mention by name) were lurking in the shaded areas and evaluating the scent of their unexpected prey. It seems to this writer that the menacing marauders were attracted mostly to those wearing light colored clothing and with a particular chemical scent.
From some of the research that I've done, the Mosquito does not like the direct sun and they migrate towards the shady areas. Just like some of us Humans, huh?
