NW Okie's Journey
We went to some garage sales this last Saturday and found a pictorial history book, "Adventures In America," with text by John A. Kouwenhoven, published in 1938. That got me back researching my Kouwenhoven family connections on my mother's (Vada Paris) side of the family. We believe the "A" in John A. Kouwenhoven stands for "Atlee." J. A. Kouwenhoven Obituary, died at age 80.
Most of the Kouwenhovens sprang from Wolfert Gerritsen Van Kouwenhoven, the same as my CONOVERs/KOUWENHOVENs.
The author, John A. Kouwenhoven, was brought up in Yonkers, New York, and graduated from Wesleyan in 1931. Kouwenhoven taught four years at the Harvard school in Hawthorne, New York. In 1938 Kouwenhoven was an instructor at Columbia University.
In searching the Kouwenhoven connections we ran across a Williams Williamson Kouwenhoven, who was a grandson of Garret and Sarah Elizabeth (Wyck) Kouwenhoven.
William Williamson Kouwenhoven (1846-1928) and his wife Minnie Meserole's sons: Dr. John Kouwenhoven of Yonkers and Cornelius B. Kouwenhoven of Scarsdale, N.Y. What I am not sure of is if Dr. John Kouwenhoven of Yonkers, NY was,is the same as John A. Kouwenhoven.
The grandfather, Garrett Kouwenhoven died in 1854, at the age of 76 and he was succeeded by his son Cornelius B., who came to the present Kouwenhoven house upon his marriage. Peter Kouwenhoven, born in 1842, son of Cornelius B., resided in the house at 3 Kouwenhoven place.
I did find a "Last Will & Testament" for Garrett Kouwenhoven that mentions Cornelius B. and William W. Kouwenhoven. I also found that William W. Kouwenhoven had been married twice to the following Spouses: Catherine R. Hendrickson (1847-1899), Minnie Meserole (1863-1953).
Good Night! Good Luck!
