1949 - Democratic Socialism Was Best Bulwark Against Communism.
It was in the Daily Independent Journal, San Rafael, California, dated 24 May 1949, Tuesday, page 7, Dr. Louis Wassermann told members of the Sausalito Forum at the Alta Mira hotel, Democratic socialism was the best bulwark against communism. There is a difference between communism and socialism. It was the "Hearst Press" that tried to make them synomious.

Dr. Wasserman said Democratic socialism has appeal on the following basis: Promise of land to the peasants, jobs and social security, encouragement of labor unions, equality to all racial and religious groups> On foreign policy, the proximity of Russia was a potent factor for encouraging closer relations with it rather than with the United States.
In the 19th century, Russia aided the Balkans against the Turks, in the 30's the Soviet Union fought for collective security against the Fascist countries when the U.S. was still non-interventionist, and in 1949 it was the Soviet Union which asked the Untied States to mediate the civil war in Greece.
Dr. Wasserman claimed the State Department had recognized the need for cooperation with democratic socialism in Europe. despite the "deliberate efforts in the Hearst press and others to make communism and socialism seem synonymous," there are differences of method and aims.
Dr. WAsserman foresaw a long period of negotiation with the Soviet Union in Europe, pointing out that the type of capitalism known here would not return to Europe, "because we could not accept the alternative which was war."
