NW Okie's Journey
Here it is another four years later and another "Leap Year!" This NW Okie was born four days before the 29th February, 1948. I know I was born early on that wintry morning in late February, 1948. My dad had to borrow a vehicle from a farm neighbor North of Waynoka, Oklahoma to get my mom to the hospital in Alva. Was it scheduled that way so I would not have the 29th of February as a birthdate?
What Is Leap Year?
The factual basis for what is now recognized as traditional leap year custom, stems from Julius Caesar's scientists, who rigged up our present calendar and found an extra day rearing its head every fourth year. This orphaned 24 hours was tacked onto February, because February with only 28 days, was a mere youngster among adult months.
It goes as far back into the 13th century, the woman-chases-man idea gained enough ground to merit legal sanction in Scotland, France and some other countries. That was all the watchful women needed. They took it from there.
As today, open season on males and feminine proposal doing leap years are as rooted in common tradition as sending valentines.
Did you know that careful greeting card manufacturers were prepared for leap year long before old 1947 was on his last legs. It was according to Jack Pembroke, a local greeting card distributor, the policy of manufacturing special leap year comic cards proved so successful in past years that during 1948 more of the sought after comics would be available throughout Salt Lake City and the country.
We shall overcome! Good Night! Good Luck!
