Walking With Sweet Silly Sadie Dawg

Woof! Woof! "With the relentless march time, groundhog day approaches. Let her approach and give the countersign. Groundhog day is purely an American institution, and as such re respect the day and the ground but not the hog. The only groundhog the news has any respect for comes in the shape of sausage."

Found on Newspapers.com

The above quote was found in the Belle Plaine News out of Belle Plaine, Kansas, 29 January 1887, Saturday, page 3.

Here is another article concerning that infamous prophet we call the groundhog. It was found ing the Daily Arkansas Gazette, Little Rock, Arkansas, dated 2 February, 1887, Wednesday, page 8: "Ground Hog Day."

To the Editor of The Gazette:
In order that all may be able to know what kind of weather we are to have for the next six weeks, will you please republish the scientific disquisition D. R. Wing on "Groundhog Day," which appeared in your columns last February, and greatly oblige the scientific world. Yours, Scientist.

Mr. Wing's Theory On the Groundhog Business. Found on Newspapers.com

To the Editor of The Gazette:
I notice the remarks of Snax in your columns of the 4th and concur with him that you have got the reading public somewhat mixed on the groundhog business. Now, I will own up that I am superstitious in some things and a strong believer in the prognostications of the ground hog. In fact, it has been the index hand of all my life, pointing to a never failing and sure sign, and one you can bank on every time. Now, ignorer to put you on the right track and ut a final quietus to this groundhog case, I will here state that the fact of the matter is this, and by close observation in the future the truths of this Irish legend will be verified.

It is an undisputed fact among nationalist that the groundhog comes out of his hole on the second day of February of each year, and has been following this habit regularly ever since he was a wood chuck.

It is also known that he invariably leaves the hole behind him. AS it would not cast a shadow, the groundhog could not employ it in his sign-making business. Now, my belief is this: If the groundhog comes out, or the sun comes out and the groundhog don't come out, that is considered a standoff and don't count. But if the groundhog came out and the sun being out, and he being so thin after his long fast that he could not cast a shadow and he should take a notion to return to his hole without giving any instructions to the weather bureau, that also would be declared off; but should the sun and the groundhog stand in with each other and the sun should put up the shade in case the groundhog couldn't cast one, and then return to his hole, the supposition is that the weather for the following six weeks will be from fair to middling with a promiscuous variation. - D. R. Wing."

Woof! Woof! I have a dream! That all humans no matter their race, culture, religion, gender, etc... has a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as they see fit.
