NW Okie's Journey

Finally! We found a clearing between snowstorms in southwest Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico for traveling down to Houston, Texas for New Years with special friends. Also escaping the frigid temperatures of the Rockies on these old bones.

How many of you have streets in your community named "Flynn Street" or Flynn Avenue?" We found some interesting history concerning Dennis Flynn for whom those "Flynn Streets" were named.

Found on Newspapers.com

His Platform For Mayor: "Sunday Ball" (1907)
It was in the San Antonio Gazette, San Antonio, Texas, dated 7 September 1907, Saturday, page 14, that we found this article concerning: "His Platform For Mayor: 'Sunday Ball.' The Mayor was Jas. B. Walker.

Findlay, O., Sept. 7 (1907) - When the ballots were cast in 1907, local interest would be arrayed for and against Sunday baseball.

For Mayor James B. Walker, civil war veteran, was out flat-footed for and with the game, Sunday or any other old day. The ministers were against the "desecration of the day," and to date have prevented Sunday games at Riverside Park.

Walker refused in interfere, for the reason that "workingmen are entitled to see a game once a week, when only the rich and idle can attend the other six days."

Appeals from ministers did not move the mayor. Then Prosecutor David, hero of the Standard oil fight, was besieged, and capitulated, putting a stop to the games.

Party lines were obliterated. The fans and the younger element were out for Walker, while the anti-Sunday baseball crowd would back whoever opposes Walker. It was probable that T. F. Gillespie make the run on the Sunday school ticket, being the only man to date who was willing to take a chance.

Good Night! Good Luck! Happy Holidays To All!
