In its half century of life "Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York" had passed through many editions, but never had this famous humorous work of Washington Irving appeared in such handsome form as now. It is a treat for the true book lover to open the covers of so beautiful a volume as this one from the Russell press. A handsome quarto, it is bound appropriately in sober Dutch gray, lightened with the yellow and gold title showing two jolly burghers of New Amsterdam chatting one their pipes. Within it is an admirable example of the perfection of American typography, while the full-page illustrations by Mayfield Parrish are delightfully humorous proofs of the ability of one of the mast talented and original of our illustrators.
Of the masterpiece that Irving gave to the world from Sunnyside so long ago, it is needless now to speak. The charm of his quiet humor is as keenly enjoyed by this generation as by his own, and it is enough to say that the "Knickerbocker History" has at last a fitting dress and one that makes it an ornament for any library.
