Walking With Sweet Silly Sadie (Dawg)

While we are receiving an early December snow storm these past few days, over the weekend, NW Okie has me digging up some history of Nieuw Nederlandt (New Netherlands or what you might know as New York).

Found on Newspapers.com

Among the Toasts given at the late Ploughing Match at the Wallabout, was one in Dutch, by Gen. Johnson:

George Jansen De Ranelje, Tunis Guysbert Bogart, and Jeremiah Remsen Vanderbeck, farmers from Waal in the Netherlands; they were the first men who began farming in the New Netherlands at the Wallabout in the year 1625.

Anyone out there related to Albert & Johanna (VanDerAa) Couwenhoven? We found this "Golden Wedding (1894-1944) announcement in the Illinois The Pointer, Riverdale, Illinois, dated 8 June 1944, Thursday, page 6.

Golden Wedding 1894-1944

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kouwenhoven of 15500 South Park Avenue, South Holland, hoped to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage the following week, Wednesday, June 14, 1944. Mrs. Couwenhoven was the former Johanna VanDerAa. They were united in marriage in the Reformed church of this place with the Rev. J. Brooks performing the ceremony.

They are a well-known couple here, having lived their entire married life in this community. Mrs. Cowenhoven was born in South Holland. Mr. Couwenhoven was born in the Netherlands, coming here to America at the age of 16 years.

They were both enjoying good health, although Mrs. Couwenhoven was still invalided due to having had both hips fractured during the past two years. For twenty years Mr. Couwenhoven worked for the D. & E. I. railroad, first as an inspector, later as a foreman. During the latter years they operated a dry goods store at the address at which they are still residing.

Their remaining brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, other relatives, friends and neighbors wish to extend them their heartiest congratulations and best wishes on this occasion, hoping that God may grant them his choicest blessings as they go on along life's pathway together.

That is all for now concerning the Couwenhoven ancestry and genealogy. Woof! Woof! Happy Winter Holidays!
