One hundred years ago today, 29 June 1915, one of the headlines on the front page of The Oklahoma City Times read: "Missouri Miners Quit; They Demand Higher Pay." And ... "Call issued to Women Workers To Organize."
Missouri Miners Quit
Joplin, Mo., June 29 (1915) -- Virtually all the large mines of the Webb City-Carterville district remained closed while 2,000 miners refused to work until granted an increase in wages. The men went to the mines prepared to work if given higher pay, but as the operators stood pat the miners returned to their homes. There had been no disorder, All saloons had been closed.
Call Issued To Women Workers To Organize
New York, June 29 (1915) -- Margaret Dreir Robins, president of the Women's Trades Union league issued a call tot he 7 million women workers in the United States to organize to obtain better working conditions and to become affiliated with he American Federation of Labor.
