1914 - White Slaver Captured In Love County (Okla.)

It was one hundred years ago, 24 November 1914, Tuesday, that The Daily Ardmoreite, out of Ardmore, Oklahoma reported on the front page, "White Slaver Captured In Love County." Sheriff Cochran had him (white silver) in charge and he would be dealt with at the March term of district court.

It was considered a harrowing tale to the sheriff of Love county when he arrested the man who had stolen a young 15 years of age, girl from home in Dallas in August of 1914. The girl had been held a prisoner in an old cave near Jimtown, in Love county.

The man gave his name as Frank Craighead, and his home as Dallas. The little girl was Cora Wade, who was at the time of this news article in charge of her father in Marietta.

The little girl stated that she was stolen from home in August and after wandering about with Craighead for a time, he finally located in this cave on the bank of the Red river near Jimtown. The girl stated that he would not allow her to talk to anyone, but kept her a close prisoner. Craighead left the cave for a short time that Saturday in 1914, and while he was away, she communicated with some fishermen in a boat across the river, who came to Marietta and informed the sheriff of the condition of affairs. Sheriff Cochran immediately went to the scene and placed the man under arrest. He was taken to the county jail and waived preliminary examination the next day. He would be tried at the March term of the district court.

Back then the feeling against Craighead was very high in Marietta, but no fears of violence were expressed. The tale told by the little girl was most revolting, if true. Craig head gave his age as 24.
