1914, Rapid Growth Of Budded Pecan Tree
On the front page of The Daily Ardmoreite, dated Tuesday, 3 November 1914, was the following headline concerning a "Rapid Growth of Budded Pecan Tree." In seven years the tree had born magnificent nuts in Ardmore, Oklahoma. pecan industry made Ardmore great.
On statehood day, March 9th, 1907, Col. Sidney Suggs planted some budded pecan trees on his lot on N. Washington street, and on 2 November 1914, from one of those trees he gathered five dozen fine paper shell pecans of immense size.
They were reporting back in 1914, the pecan industry of this section of the state was beginning to attract attention. O. K. Darden at Lone Grove had been budding trees for several years and had an orchard that would insure him a steady income the rest of his life. It took about twelve years to get a pecan orchard up to where it would pay as bearers of fruit, but the trees were hardy and continued to bear for many years. Some were known in their wild state to be over 100 years old.
They were also reporting that Ardmore may yet be known as the pecan center of the United States.
