1890 Capital Almanac

I received from a Monterey, Virginia connection some treasures that belonged to my cousin twice removed, Lucy (Eckard) Lindsay (1883-1946): a few old postcards written to Lucy Eckard, dating back to 1910; a court record showing Sam L. Lindsay appointed as administrator of Lucy Eckard Lindsay's estate (27th April 1946, Highland county, Virginia); and couple of Capital Almanac 1889 and 1890. Both of the Almanacs were given to Lucy Eckard by her father, Jacob "Job" Eckard.

The Year 1890 comprised the latter part of the 114th and the beginning of the 115th year of the Independence of the United States of America. The first day of the year 1890 was the 2,411, 369th day of the Julian Period.

In the year 1890 there would be three eclipses, two of the sun, and one of the moon, and a lunar Appulse. June 2-3. The moon being visible to North and South America, and adjacent oceans.

United States of America

The United States of America in 1890 was a form of a Federal Republic, consisting of 42 States and 7 Territories. Its greatest length east and west was about 2800 miles. Its average breadth about 1200 miles. Its entire area 3,570,271 square miles or 2,284,973,440 acres. Its population according to the last census taken (1880), was 50,267,519, in which year 9,193,906 votes were cast at the Presidential election. Assuming that the vote cast in 1888, viz, 11,384,937, bore the same relation to the then existing population, as the vote of 1880, bore to the population in the census year.

The Air We Breathe

The constituents of pure air are: oxygen, 20.96; Nitrogen, 79.00; Carbonic Acid, .04. A human being respires about 15 cubic feet in one hour, producing 500 grains of carbonic acid, corresponding to 137 grains of carbon, and 200 grains of water. In one hour, 415 grains of oxygen are consumed, and 73 cubic feet of pure air vitiated. An average man requires 930 cubic feet of air every hour, and 800 cubic feet of well-ventilated space are essential to perfect health. A lighted wax candle will consume as much oxygen in an hour as a man.   |  View or Add Comments (0 Comments)   |   Receive updates ( subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
