100 Years Ago Tuesday 18 August 1914
According to The Daily Ardmoreite, dated Tuesday, 18 August 1914, out of Ardmore, Oklahoma, one of the front page headlines boasted: Believed Big Battle Is Now On With Armies Near Waterloo. Brussels reported that serious engagement was now believed in progress. British official announcement of landing of expeditionary force in France made today for first time but whereabouts and strength was still guarded as Japan's ultimatum was delivered.
London, Aug. 18 (1914) - The most important revelation was the official announcement that a British Expeditionary force had been landed in France. This was the first authoritative indication of the whereabouts of the British army, but the disposition and strength was still jealously guarded.
The three allied armies were now working together on a coherent campaign and the policy of secrecy had extended to Belgium.
The official bureau announced that there had been no casualties as yet in the British army.
