1917 Poem - To Our boys In France
On Saturday, 30 June 1917, in the Richmond Times Dispatch, the following poem: To Our Boys In France made headlines on page 6.
To Our Boys In France
Brave lads who are the token
Of what this land will do,
Who bear the word, unspoken,
That it will see things through.
The bold heart of the nation
Beats with a father's pride
And in new exaltation
Since you have crossed the tide.
An now each hope lives in you
That freedom will prevail,
And that your deeds will win you
High place in honor's tale.
You are our sons and brothers --
The chosen of our race --
And to you will come others
To help you keep your place.
This day mankind is blessing
The banner that you bear,
Its faith in you confessing --
A faith that knows no fear.
Far off the rifle rattles,
The great gun roars in might;
Now may the God of Battles
Make strong your arms to smite!
