Willie Ritchie, World Champion Boxer, 1912
Remember Willie Richie of 1912? The boxer they were booming as a coming world's champion in 1912? Willie Richie, San francisco boxer, was a lightweight champion of the world.
According to The Day Book, 27 May 1912, pg. 19, out of Chicago, Illinois, The San Francisco boxer, Will Ritchie was a coming World's Champion. To a great many who saw the San Francisco boxer give Ad Wolgast a thorough beating in four rounds it would not be surprising to see him set down in the records as the premier of his class within a very short time. Back in 1912 they were talking that if Joe Rivers failed to annex the crown on next Independence Day, Ritchie would be the real contender for the title.
A few months past 21, with only a short career in the ring, the future of Ritchie was one of the brightest and full of promise back in 1912. They spoke of Ritchie having a thoroughly clean liver, bright, intelligent, possessed of personality that won friends, having the bearing appearance of a young bank clerk rather than that of a boxer. Ritchie was a credit to the much maligned profession of boxing. No tin ears or busted beaks.
