What & Who Was Jack Ruby?
I am sure you remember back to 22 November 1963, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, and the murder of the alleged assassin, Lee HARVEY Oswald (November 24, 1963), by the Carousel nightclub owner, Jack Leon Ruby. We know Ruby was arrested and tried, but what happened to Ruby afterwards? Was Jack Leon Ruby a mobster, a spook, someone who formerly supplied guns to Cuba, or merely an emotional, hot-temepered "wannabe" who expected public acclaim for killing Oswald?
Jack Ruby (born 25 March 1911, Jacob Leon Rubenstein) changed his name in December 1947 to Jack Leon Ruby. Ruby was a Dallas nightclub owner of the Carousel nightclub. On November 24, 1963, Ruby fatally shot Lee HARVEY Oswald with a snub-nosed Colt Cobra .38, when Harvey Oswald was being transported to another law-enforcement facility for safe keeping. Jack Ruby was sentenced to death on March 14, 1964, dying in prison on January 3, 1967. Jack Ruby was buried in Westlawn Cemetery, Illinois.
About Ruby's Earlier Life
At Murderpedia.org we learn that Jack Ruby as a youngster ran errands for Al Capone's Mafia organization. During the 1940s, Ruby frequented race tracks in Illinois and California. Ruby was drafted in 1943, serving in the Army Air Forces during WWII, working as an aircraft mechanic at bases in the US until 1946. After being discharged, Ruby returned to Chicago.
It was 1947 when Ruby moved to Dallas, where he and his brothers soon afterward shortened their surnames from "Rubenstein" to "Ruby." The Rubenstein brothers changed their names to Ruby because they had opened up a mail order business and feared that some customers would refuse to do business with Jews. Jack later went on to manage various nightclubs, strip clubs, and dance halls and becoming acquainted with the stripper "Candy Barr."
Ruby also developed close ties to many Dallas police officers, who frequented his nightclubs where Ruby showered them with large quantities of liquor and other favors.
We find Ruby went to Cuba in 1959 on one of his gun-running ventures and to visit a Mafia-connected friend, influential Dallas gambler, Lewis McWillie, whom Fidel Castro had briefly imprisoned. McWillie was also connected to leading mobsters Meyer Lansky, Carlos Marcello and Santo Trafficante Jr.
There is a report issued by the House Select Committee on Assassinations that states Jack Ruby knew Sam and Joe Campisi since 1947, and had been seen with them on many occasions.
It was in 1963, a PBS news report that stated the Campisi Brothers were leading figures in the Dallas underworld. The Campisi Brothers were lieutenants of Carlos Marcello, the Mafia boss who had reportedly talked of killing the President.
The day before President Kennedy was assassinated, Ruby went to Joe Campisi's restaurant, and several day later (after Ruby was put in jail for murdering HARVEY Oswald) Campisi visited Ruby in jail. Read more of Jack Ruby at the link above at murderpedia.org.
