100 Years Ago - Tuesday 26 May 1914

One hundred years ago, 26 May 1914, Tuesday, The Ardmoreite front page headlines had an article entitled, "Wilson And Teddy Hold Conference." Col. roosevelt would spend the day in Washington and meet the leaders.

Washington, May 25 (1914) -- Col. Theodore Rooseelt and president Wilson had arranged for a conference on May 26, 1914, to be held at the White House. It was expected that they would discuss many of the matters then pending before the administration.

Immediately upon his arrival at the capital Col. Roosevelt would go to progressive headquarters where he expected all the progressives in congress to meet him and where he would get first hand information as to all the events that had taken place in Washington during the last few months, while he had been absent from the country.

Some of Col. Roosevelt's supporters had been urging him to take issue with President Wilson and the present administration before the republicans take such a step. Roosevelt had said that he intends to keep out of politics until after he returns from Spain, where he will go to attend the wedding of his son, but under their pleadings it was believed that he will fire the opening gun before he leaves.

Roosevelt had already expressed briefly his opposition to the Wilson administration's advocacy of the canal tolls exemption act and the proposal to pay Colombia $25,000,000. He had stated that the proposed payment of that sum to Colombia was the height of foolishness.

It was understood that Col. Roosevelt would make his severest attacks on the administration's foreign policy and the operation of the Underwood tariff law. Since his return he had been flooded with information about the operation of the Underwood tariff law and was we'll prepared to discuss it.

It developed later that Colonel Roosevelt might also meet the republican leaders. It was said at this meeting that the presidential campaign of 1916 and the candidacy of Roosevelt on a joint republican progressive ticket would be broached.
