News of the Vicinity, Beaver, Oklahoma (1901)

In The Beaver Herald, dated 10 October 1901, we found the following News Of The Vicinity: A. H. Barrett and A. Vantassel were in town Tuesday; E. E. Harlin of Logan township was a business seller in town Monday; Call on J. P. Odlell & Co., for seed rye, Liberal, Kansas; and Buidling material of all kinds at Bolin & Brown's, Liberal.

They were also talking about a good rain that fell there Saturday night and subsequent showers followed at intervals all day Sunday. The Meade Globe seemed to be alarmed over the advent of so many skunks about the city back then. A number of people in this vicinity went up tot he T.6 ranch to attend a roundup. The Elmwood school commenced Monday with Miss Lizzie Dunlop of Clear Lake as teacher. The board of county commissioners met in regular session and adjourned. All members of the board were present.

Humphrey Hughes and B. Orner of Grand Valley passed through Beaver with a bunch of horses which they were taking to Arkansas. W. H. Thompson and daughter Miss Dora who have been visiting relatives at the is place left Tuesday morning for his home at Urichsvillle, Ohio.

C. C. Barker went back on the Beaver mail line first of the month. Mr. Bradshaw who has been on the line for the last quarter has been a very faithful and fast carrier.

John Hibbs of Elmwood had a good saddle horse killed by lightning Sunday night,a nd Sheriff Hibbs of this place had a horse killed in the same way Monday night.

Rev. A. C. McShane started Tuesday morning for Lebanon, Missouri to secure a home for his five children whom he took with him. He expects to be absent about month.

Clarence Allison who has been held in the jail on an indictment charging him with larceny gave bond yesterday for his appearance in court. It is understood that Lon Ford will also give bond in a short time.

School commenced Monday in the advanced department of the Beaver school with William Quinn as teacher. The enrollment was twenty-one making a total enrollment of sixty-one in the Beaver school.

One of Beaver's blushing maidens a few evenings ago asked her best fellow what was the difference between a kiss and a dog in a refrigerator. He gave it up. She replied, "It's dog-on (n)toe." he fell on his chair and was threatened with syncope. We will mention no names this time.

County Superintendent Miss Corths Kagay accompanied by Miss Edith Loofbourrow started Tuesday on a trip to the western part of the county. Miss Kagay would visit schools while away and Mis Loffbourrow goes for the pleasure of the trip, and to visit with old time friends.

Deputy Sheriff Will Cochran took a good horse away from W. S. Potter, Sunday, that he had replevin papers for. It seems the horse had been sold to Mr. Potter last winter and the owner who resides in the eastern part of the county had it and everything else mortgaged ordered the horse recovered. This was in the Kenton News.

B. F. Hedrick, of Ashland, Kansas accompanied by his father, passed through town the first of the week enroute to Logan where he has been engaged to teach the Logan school. There was some delay in the commencement of the school owing to the fact that the board decided to employ a man as teacher and experienced some difficulty in securing one.   |  View or Add Comments (0 Comments)   |   Receive updates ( subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
