1909 Canyon City (Texas) Gets Normal School
It is in the Palestine Daily Herald, dated 2 September 1909, Thursday, that we find the article about "Canyon City Gets Normal." This West Texas town bid one hundred and one thousand dollars for West Texas Normal School.
Austin, Texas, Sept. 2 (1909) -- Canyon City, in Randall county, in the western extreme of the Panhandle, on the Pecos and North Texas railroad, was selected for the site of the new West Teas Normal. The bid of Canyon City was one hundred and one thousand dollars, in cash and land and buildings, and the choice was unanimous. Lieutenant Governor Davidson and Senator Hudspeth denied that there was any division of the committee in favor of San Angelo because of the influence exerted by the governor. Canyon City was about twenty-five miles southwest of Amarillo, and had a population of about two thousand.
