50 years Ago: The Beatles (7-9 Feb. 1964)
Hey, Baby Boomers! Can you remember where and what you were doing 7th thru 9th of February 1964? If that date does not ring a bell, what about fifty years ago when the Beatles came to America and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show?
This NW Okie would have been 15 going on 16 years of age. I was not one of the screaming females that followed the Beatles that much, but I do have a few favorite songs of theirs that I like to listen to today, though. What are your favorite songs?
50 years ago, on Feb. 7, 1964, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr boarded Pan Am Flight 101 in London for their first U.S. visit, and they had little idea what lay in store for them. But minutes before landing, news filtered from the cockpit through the plane via the pilot, "Tell the boys there's a big crowd waiting for them." And . . . Beatlemania had began in America!
It was 8:12pm, Eastern Time, Sunday, February 9, 1964, The Ed Sullivan Show returned from a commercial, and there was Ed Sullivan standing before a restless crowd. The noise and mania had begun before Ed Sullivan could even announce the Beatles. It was estimated that 73 million Americans were watching that night as the Beatles made their live U.S. television debut, with the Beatles beginning with "All My Lovin'." There was screaming at the end of every phrase in the lyrics. The crowd seemed to explode when the Beatles began singing "She Loves You." Remember the songs: "I Saw Her Standing there" and "I wanna Hold Your Hand?"
