1913 Ardmore - Many Watch the Old Year Out

The Daily Ardmoreite, in Ardmore, Southern Oklahoma, reported that "Many Watch the Old Year Out." Elks and Knights of Pythias keep open house until after birth of New Year.

The Elks and Knights of Pythias kept open house, December 31, 1912 thru January 1, 1913, to watch the old year out and the new year in, when the hour of midnight arrived, assisted in the pandemonium that broke loose simultaneously in all parts of the city.

At the Knights of Pythias hall about thirty couples indulged in an informal dance and so well was the function enjoyed that the dancers remained long after midnight. January 1, 1913, the streets of the city presented a deserted appearance, the banks, all city and county offices were closed, and the employees as a rule were out in the fields with dog and gun, but those who remained in the city were out early wishing their friends a bright and prosperous new year.

The oldest inhabitant of this city remarked that this had been the quietest Christmas ever known in Ardmore, in times past the people were inclined to unloosen during the holidays and make things lively if not noisy, but there seemed to be a disposition to spend the holidays in a safe and sane manner and needless to say, it was a decided improvement over the old system. Many of this county had not done their Christmas shopping yet form the fact that for the past six weeks the roads had been might near impassable, but merchants were consoling themselves with the fact that they will get the trade as soon as the roads would permit these people getting to town, and that the year 1913 and it is a thing of the past every one took advantage of an early start this morning and made their New Year's resolutions early.   |  View or Add Comments (0 Comments)   |   Receive updates ( subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
