100 Years Ago, 1 January 1913
As reported in The Daily Ardmoreite, in Ardmore, Southern Oklahoma, via Chicago, Ill., Jan 1, 1913, one hundred years ago today, there was an unemployed mob that disturbed Chicago. It had police to disperse the crowd of 300 working men. They wanted work, not charity.
Chicago, Ill., 1 Jan., 1913 - "Entering restaurants and demanding food, breaking windows, picturing automobile tires, halting street cars and shouting that they wanted work, five hundred unemployed men created a great disturbance in the downtown streets early today.
"The police finally dispersed them. They bore a banner, upon which was inscribed 'we demand work, not charity.'"
