21 November 1963 - The Beatles

Remember "The Beatles" invasion? The following youtube CBS news report dated 21 November 1963 is believed to be the first major US news report to feature "The Beatles" and the new British phenomenon of Beatlemania. It featured footage recorded at the Winter Gardens Theatre, Bournemouth, England on 16 November 1963, and was broadcast on 21 November in America.



Actually, this originally aired Friday morning, 22 November 1963, on the CBS morning news. It was to re-air that evening, but President Kennedy's assassination prevented that, so it was shelved until December 10, 1963, when Walter Cronkite decided that such a story would raise the nation's spirits. Watching this was a WWDC DJ named CArroll James. He asked a BOAC stewardess to bring their newest single over to the US, "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
