One Hundred Years Ago - 27 May 1913
On hundred years ago today (27 May 1913), Tuesday, in Aberdeen, Washington, the Semi-weekly Aberdeen Herald front page headlines read: "Will Observe Memorial Day." George Crook Post, G.A.R. invited General Observation of Historic Day.
Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-65, were becoming few and feeble as the years rolled by, but those that were able rarely omitted the opportunity to testify their regard for those comrades who had gone before on May 30, Decoration Day. It was reported that the next Friday in Aberdeen would be no exception to this rule, and, weather permitting, to that end Commander James M. Birmingham of the General George Crook Post No. 63, G.A.R., has issued an invitation to the Women's Relief Corps, the Ladies of the G.A.R. Spanish War Veterans, Co. G.N.G. W., the public schools, lodges and societies within the city of Aberdeen to take part wight he Post in memorial services May 30th.
