Memories of Alva (Oklahoma)
Another one of my readers sent me some of her fond memories of growing up around Alva. Genevieve (Cook) and her family used to live across the street north of us when we lived at 703 7th Street (Alva, Oklahoma). There were three in their family (two girls and one boy). We would play in their yard and they would play basketball, hula hoops, etc... over in our yard. By the way... Do you remember when hula hoops first came out and you could buy them for under a dollar?
Anyway, Genevieve remembers, "...having a soda at Holder-Southern Drug where the floor squeaked as you walked on it; shopping in Anthony's with the 'air-cylinder' that sent money upstairs after you bought an item; the Rialto with great family movies; and last but not least, driving around the old town square, up 6th Street, turn left at the Boulevard, right into the Sonic or turn around at Pangburn's restaurant and continue dragging these Oklahoma streets in northwest Oklahoma. Doing it all over and over for a couple of hours to see your friends after school and in the evening. Those were our entertainment in this northwest, rural Oklahoma community.
