Green Valley School
Want to know more about the Green Valley School? This appeared in our OkieLegacy Ezine, Vol. IV, 2002. We thought it worth saving to our "OkieLegacy" database concerning the Old Green Valley School, as shared by Rod Murrow over ten years ago.
"I have been given some information about the old Green Valley school, west of Carmen. In a stack of old family photographs I am scanning, there is a photo of the school and all the students, including my great-uncle Sam Riggs (now deceased, but his wife Oneita Riggs lived at the Homestead in Alva. She has recently sold the family business, Riggs Advertising Company and retired at age 96 or so).
"Many of the Riggs siblings attended Green Valley school. I believe the land for the school was originally part of the Riggs family homestead after 'The Run' over 100 years ago. Also in my collection is a copy of the first school house on the property, a soddie. The teacher was one of the Riggs daughters, who taught there for a number of years.
"I'm planning to create a special web page for the school, as part of my genealogy pages (since the school was on Riggs land and a Riggs was one of the teachers -- and so many of the Riggs family attended school there -- and also because the old school was still part of my family's activities right up until the time it was destroyed in a tornado a couple of years ago). It has been replaced with a new, slightly larger building and the Green Valley community still meets there regularly. The Green Valley Free Methodist Church is still on the corner and they meet every Sunday for services.
If any of your readers has information to share about any of the teachers, pupils who may have attended there, or anything else of interest, I would love to know about it and be able to share it through my web page. Thanks." -- Rod Murrow
