On this day: August 22, 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt became the first United States chief executive to ride in an automobile in public. It was in Hartford, Connecticut, August 22, 1902, President Roosevelt began his tour of New England amid scenes of remarkable enthusiasm. Roosevelt landed from the yacht Syip, at New Haven, shortly after 1 pm in the afternoon, progressing to on through New England. he addressed an audience of more than 5,000 persons in the Coliseum.
