Obit - Jack Leon Erskine
Last Monday, 25 April 2011, one of my Dad's first cousin, Jack Leon Erskine, (1919-2011) passed away at the age of 91 years, in Lake Jackson, Texas. This is in memory of my first cousin 1x removed.
Jack Leon Erskine was born to Spencer and Lulu McGill Erskine on June 17, 1919 at Alva, Oklahoma, and passed away on April 25, 2011, at his home in Lake Jackson, Texas. Jack lived most of his life in Alva, only moving to Texas to be near his sons three years ago.
Jack attended the West Side School, now Washington Elementary, then Alva Junior High and Alva Senior High in the class of 1938. He attended Oklahoma Military Academy at Claremore for a short period then transferred back to Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Here he met and married the former Mary Wessels in 1940. They made their home in Alva for over 70 years, except for a short period living in Enid and Bartlesville. He was privileged to live in Alva during the early years spending many hours at his Uncle Jim McGill's furniture store just two doors off the square. He and his cousins managed the swimming pool that his Uncles, Jim and Will McGill owned, located downtown just two doors west of the furniture store.
He served in the National Guard 45th Signal Corps and then Batt A. 54th AART Bn, at Ft Bliss, Texas, and was discharged in 1944.
Jack returned to Alva and went to work for family friends, the Masons, at Alva State Bank. After ten years there he went to work for other longtime friends, the Myers, at Central National Bank. He worked there until his retirement in December of 1981. They bought their home at 1022 Church in 1946, and it was home until 2003 when they retired to the Homestead for five years and then Carriage Inn for three years in Lake Jackson, Texas.
He was christened as an infant and confirmed as a young boy and held membership at the First Presbyterian Church for almost ninety two years. He spent many hours caring for the church property.
He leaves his wife, Mary and two sons, James Erskine, John Erskine and wife Pat all of Lake Jackson, two granddaughters Marsha Erskine of Spring, Texas, Leslie and husband Steve Huye and two great grandchildren Joshua Scott and Lauren Michelle Huye of Missouri City, Texas.
He is also survived by a brother Donald and wife Sylva of Norman, Oklahoma, brother-in-law John Anderson of Oklahoma City and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents Spencer and Lulu Erskine and a sister Margaret Anderson.
