1905 - Some More Hot Air In NW O. T.

Some More Hot Air - The Courier Tries Again to Misrepresent County Affairs To the People Jack Rose, in his Courier last week says, "In the last ten years the county deposits have been worth about $30,000.00 and that the county ought to have, during that period, received that amount in interest."

Now to show the public how easy it is for a republican editor and officers to misrepresent matters, let the reader bear in mind that the average deposits during the past 10 years has been between $30,000 and $40,000. But even if it has been $40,000 at 2 1/2 per cent it would have given only $1,000.00 per year, or $10,000.00 for 10 years; just one-third the amount that Ross stated. But that is about as near as he can get to the truth. The fact is, he is trying to hoodwink the people and keep their minds from wandering back to last winter when about all the county officers spent weeks at Guthrie assisting Misrepresentative A. Jack Ross in passing a bill to raise their salaries.

He has quit discussing the workings of that notorious depository law, and it has nothing whatever in it to favor the taxpayers excepting that little interest; and it will cost the people twice that interest in the loss of time and expense in coming to the treasurer's office to pay their taxes. Watch it work.

One of the very amusing and disgusting proceedings about the courthouse, is the secret lobby rendezvous in the county attorney's office (and Mr. Ross is deputy county attorney.) Everything that is done by the commissioners must first be passed upon by the "gang" in the lobby room, and it is becoming common talk. But such fool statements as the Courier publishes occasionally is good evidence that the "gang" should employ a "figgerer" before going into print.

The fact is, the increased salaries of county officers will cost our taxpayers about three times the amount received as interest on deposits; but the Courier says the administration is carrying out republican campaign promises. We are very much afraid that there won't be no core left."
