Duchess of Weaselskin

With the last of September 2012 falling this last weekend and the beginning of October, 2012 arriving the first of the week, we find the Autumn Gold coloring of aspens in Southwest Colorado Rockies moving beyond their peak last week. The photo on the left was taken near Cool Bank Pass, highway 550, between Durango and Silverton, Colorado.

It is still a glorious sight to see the mountain tops covered in snow and the aspen, pines and scrub oaks below changing in their season of colors.

100 Years Ago Today - 1 October 1912

One hundred years ago today, 1 October 1912, The San Francisco Call, dated Tuesday, in San Francisco, California, was reporting front page headlines, such as: "G.O.P. men Battle For Franchise," "mystery of Big Jewel Theft At Last Revealed," "Colonel Gains Place On Rolls of Ananias Club," and much more 1912 headlines.

NW Okie's Corner

Besides taking in the golden cools of the aspens in southwest colorado, I have been busy reading a Southern Historical Magazine published in August, 1892 and concerning some Pioneer History of my WARWICK ancestry. The history takes us through my 5th great grand uncle, Jacob Warwick (sometimes referred to as John or Jake).

Pendleton County, (West) Virginia - Town of Franklin

In Oren Frederic Morton's 1910(12) book on the "History of Pendleton County, West Virginia," we learn in chapter XVII, about "The Town of Franklin." In 1769 Francis and George Evick surveyed 160 acres of land on the left bank of the South Branch. This is on a portion of this tract that Franklin was built. George Evick appeared to have lived across the river at the mouth of the Evick gap. The early home of Francis was near a spring that issued from the hillside above the upper street and near the Ruddle tannery.

Wyatt Earp & Brothers (Stage Robbers)

In The Columbus Journal, dated Wednesday, 27 January 1897, in Columbus, Nebraska, we found an interesting article concerning Wyatt Earp portrayed as one of four brothers in a group faction called "Stage Robbers."

Have you heard about the Earp Stage Robbers? Wyatt Earp led a life of a coward throughout the west and south, shooting on a slight provocation and always had "The drop."

How West Virginia Became A Member of the Federal Union

In the Southern Historical Magazine, on page 14, we found "How West Virginia Became a Member of the Federal Union." West Virginia was the only American State ever formed within the limits of another organized State. This state creation was one of the results of the Civil War.
