The work of the Dawes commission in the Indian Territory and its effect upon what of late years has come to be called "Indian autonomy" would be hard to measure. The Indian Territory court bill is one of the direct results of the report of the Dawes commission, and it is only the beginning of the end. That the citizens of the five tribes will be compelled to allot their lands among themselves is as sure as the sun shines. It is no longer the part of wisdom for the people of this country to hold out against the inevitable; the time has come when no man has any right to assure the people here that they are safe in holding their land in common, because it is against reason and common sense.
