1889 - Electoral College Cast Formal Vote
Let us go back to 15 Jan 1889, Tuesday, page 1, of The Hazleton Sentinel, in the Hazleton, Pennsylvania newspaper concerning the use of the Electoral Colleges as they cast their formal vote between Harrison (233) and Cleveland (168). Their were scenes and incidents in the various electoral colleges. It was a lively time in New Jersey. The result tabulated; how and where the last act would be played.
The electoral colleges of the various states met the day before and formally cast their ballots, the results of which were summarized in the following: Harrison & Morton with 233; Cleveland and Thurman with 168.

Washington, Jan 15 (1889) -- In the senate Mr. Hoar introduced a concurrent resolution for the counting of the votes for president and vice president, which was referred to the committee on privileges and elections. It provides that the two houses of congress shall assemble in the hall of the house of representatives on Wednesday, Feb. 13 (1889) next, at 1 o'clock in the afternoon; that the president of the senate shall be the presiding officer; that two persons shall be appointed tellers on the part of the senate and two on the part of the house, to make a list of the votes and to report the result to the president of the senate, who is to announce the state of the vote and the persons elected - and that shall be deemed a declaration of the persons elected president and vice president of the United States, and shall be entered on the journals of the two houses.
