NW Okie's Journey

I did not know Greenwich Village was known for a famous health resort of old New York. And at the Battery of Greenwich Village, a statue of George III was torn down by patriots.

Greenwich Village Head office and several branches served lower Manhattan. the Head Office stood just a short block from the spot where Washington took the oath of office as first President. Not far away was the parade ground where the first Liberty Pole as raised and where the Declaration of Independence was read to the people of New York. To the east was the home of Samuel Osgood, first president of the City Bank, used by Washington as the first White House.

The Richmond Hill Mansion, in the original Greenwich Village, was a glittering citadel of statesmanship and fashion which became the home of Vice President John Adams and later, of Aaron Burr.

America Constitution
Have you ever heard the old saying: "When the 'Know-Nothings' and their 'Know-nothingism' get control, it will read all men are created equal, except negroes and foreigners and Catholics."

Since history proves to the everlasting credit of American Protestants, they in the past sat down on "Know-nothingism" with its hatred of foreigners and Catholics, eradicated from this country, designed by the framers of the United States constitution to be the home of civil and religious liberty.

It was found in The Davenport Democrat & Leader, in Davenport, Iowa, dated 5 November 1894, Monday, page 4, concerning the United States Constitution, Article XV, which guards the civil rights of the emancipated negroes, the civil rights of all foreigners are guaranteed by this same amendment to the USA Constitution: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, etc."

The civil rights of Catholics, as indeed members of all denominations or of no religion at all, stand together in the guarantee of the United States constitution, Article VI, which says: "No religions test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

And the other natural rights of citizens are included in the guarantee of the VI amendment, which says: "No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law."

So important did the fathers of the republic consider the matter of full religious liberty that they guarded it by a double mandate, for the first amendment to the United States constitution provides as follows: "congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of a religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

Good Night! Good Luck! We are "Stronger Together!"
