20 Sept. 1893, Fatal Prairie Fire

Have you heard the story that appeared in the 21 September 1893, Thursday, page 1, of The Guthrie Daily Leader, out of Guthrie, Oklahoma, reported, "Fatal Prairie Fire." A settler lost his wife, two children and $1,400 in money.

Enid, Oklahoma, Sept. 20 (1893) -- A terrific accident occurred six miles west of this place about 1 o'clock, 19 September 1893. Baker Tomlinson, who had settled on a climate the place referred to, left his wife and two children at his new found home and went to the land office to file his papers. While absent a prairie fire, fanned by the terrible southwest wind which had revealed for the last few days, overtook his family, who were unable to run away from it. His wife and two children were terribly burned. Mrs. Tomlinson and one of her children could not recover. The man had $1,400 in his wagon on the claim, all of which was destroyed.
