Ranger Album 1917 NSN Athletics & Basketball

At the close of the 1915-16 season the Ranger basket ball team held the championship of the secondary schools of the state, and was pronounced by all who saw them in action as the best five in the state. Because of their scientific playing, size and age, it was decided that if sufficient financial aid could be secured the team should make a trip to the Pacific coast.

Our Coaches...
Frank S. Wyatt, Basket Ball
Ruby Williams, Girls' Basket Ball - Gym
F. Park Geyer, Football

The Basketball Season
When the season opened the trip to the coast was practically assured. The boys started to work with a will. Capt. Lane went around the route early in the fall and secured the games for the team to play on their western trip. The trip to the coast was the greatest feat ever accomplished by any school in the middle west. On their tour the Rangers won eighty percent of the games played. Their success is hailed by all as unparalleled. For a bunch of boys whose average age is 19 and whose average weight is 140 pounds, to successfully complete such a tour seems almost miraculous. In this tour the Rangers met teams such as the champions of the pacific coast, and the team which took second place in the great tournament at Chicago, and they also won from teams which had beaten last year's United States champions.

After the return of the Rangers from their western trip, the athletic coach at Northwestern tried to secure games with teams in our own state. A challenge was issued. There were but two acceptances, one of them being a professional club, and in each case the opposing teams went down before the onslaught of the Rangers and their unconquerable basket ball tactics. At the last of the season the team was sent to Chicago to take part in the National tournament. Their first game was won easily, but the second was with the Brigham Young University and was lost by a small score. They started on their return trip and on their way won from the Whiting Owls of Whiting, Indiana, who also took part in the Chicago tournament. They returned home and are now hailed in Ranger land as champions of Oklahoma, conquerers of the west, and worthy opponents for any team in the world.

Class BasketBall
Class Basket ball this year at Northwestern was much more interesting than usual. All the classes put out good teams and showed more spirit than has been shown in Northwestern for a number of years. Toward the latter part of the season large crowds began to attend the games, and the classes always had good representations out to help root their defenders on to victory. In this season of class basket ball, a large number of good basket ball players were produced. This method of stirring up interest in the game and of getting more students interested enough to try to play is one of the best plans that Northwestern has yet conceived of. We predict that there will always be good class games during the basket ball season at Northwestern in the future.
