Walking With Sadie
Woof! Woof! Looking back to 1892 and appointments of U. S. Marshals before and during that time, we wonder sometimes what drove so many so called respectable families of that era to the criminal side. Especially in Kansas and Oklahoma Territory.

In "The coffeyville Weekly Journal, dated 30 December 1892, Friday, page five, there was an article about "Bad Appointments," and popular indignation aroused against U. S. Marshals.
The Coffeyville correspondent of the Kansas City times, under date of 27 December 1892, gave out the following information concerning the appointments o Bill Dalton and Bill Lipsey as deputy U. s. Marshals:
"Following the appointment of Bill Dalton as deputy marshal comes the information that Bill Lipsey, brother-in-law of Henry Starr, the desperado, and brother of Sam Lipsey, who killed his man in the territory in the summer of 1891, has been appointed a deputy by Marshal Needles of Muskogee. Bill Lipsey himself had a most unsavory reputation, and some days before he was heard in this city to say that he did not blame Starr for killing Marshal Wilson.
While for a number of years many bad appointments have been made, it would seem that the mistakes of this kind are getting more numerous."
The same correspondent also had the following information concerning Emmet Dalton's trial:
"Emmet Dalton's case, which was to be tried at Independence this week, has been postponed until the March term of court. He has finally employed an attorney and will probably fight the charge of murder hard. From a reliable source it is learned that the same tactics as were employed in the Brennan-Wood case will be resorted to, viz.; the exhausting of the jury list of the county on the plea that every citizen in the county has heard so much of the case that an impartial jury can not be secured and in that event he could be discharged, as the state could not take a change of venue. That such course will succeed is not believed.
Good Night! Good Luck! Woof! Woof!
