One Hundred Years Ago, Tuesday, 31 Aug. 1915
One hundred years ago today, The Oklahoma Times, Tuesday, 31 August 1915, could be bought for one cent. It was advertised as "a clean, wholesome paper for Oklahoma homes."
On the front page of The Oklahoma Times, far right column you might read: "Canterbury To Checotah, Okla." It goes on to report the Democratic Newspaper in Gov. Williams' home town highly praises "Removed" Man. What was that all about?
Durant, Aug. 31, (1915) -- Prof. W. Canterbury, recently relieved the presidency of the southeastern state normal school there through the action of an intensely partisan and sectional state school board, had been called to the superintendency of the city schools at Checotah, Okla.
The people of Durant almost to a man expressed regret at his removal from the state normal school, which he found in a run down condition and in one year's time broke all previous records for enrollment during the regular term, and then in the summer session enrolled more students in one term than had been enrolled in three precious summer terms.
The Durant Daily Democrat waist of him, "The excellent condition in which he has left the Southeastern State Normal school, after managing it for one year, is good proof that he is a school man of rare ability. He had the support and co-operation of ten of the twelve counties of this normal school district, and had he been selected to have managed the school another year, there is no doubt but that the Southeastern would be second only to Edmond at the end of the coming year. During his brief stay in Durant he had made a host of friends, who regret very much to see him leave."
