One Hundred Years Ago, 5 July 1915, Monday
One hundred years ago it was reported in The Guthrie Daily Leader, 5 July 1915, front page, that "Marland Leases May Be Cancelled Now."
Oklahoma City, July 5 (1915) -- E. W. Marland of Ponca city, owner of the famous Marland lease, comprising thousands of acres in eight counties would be cited to appear before the school land commission and show cause why it should not be cancelled, George Smith, secretary of the commission, announced back in July 5, 1915.
Maryland in 1912 obtained from the school land commission under Governor Cruce a blanket oil and gas lease to school land in Noble, Payne, Lincoln, Pawnee, Comanche, Stephens, Kiowa and Tillman counties, which amounted to many thousands of acres, for the small bonus of $50.
