NW Okie's Journey

Spring is just around the corner, spring storms chasing through May, 2015. As we traveled through Oklahoma, it was good to see the Cimarron River and the Red River reaching their top levels, over flowing in some areas. They have been dry for awhile so I imagine moisture was being welcome for the farmers and ranchers.

Well! Next weekend in Northwest Oklahoma (Alva) the "Goldbugs" will be swarming to town. No! It is not like a Locust or grasshopper plague that hit the past eras in northwest Oklahoma Territory. It is the Alva High School (AHS) 50th Goldbug Reunion for former AHS Goldbugs & Bugettes, who graduated from AHS between 1964 through 1966, in northwest Oklahoma.

Remember the Goldbug cheering squad called the Bugettes (all females)? Our uniforms were black wool, straight skirts, white blouses, black & white saddle oxfords, and a black wool blazer with a goldbug emblem on the upper pocket.

The Goldbug fight song went something like the following, to the tune of "On Wisconsin:"

Goldbug Fight Song
On A . . H . . S! On A . . H . . S!

On A . . H . . S!, On A . . H . . S,
Fight on for your fame.
Make a score in every quarter
And we'll win this game.
Rah . . Rah . . Rah

On A . . H . . S, On A . . H . . S,
Fight on for your fame.
Fight, Goldbugs, Fight
And we will win this game.

For this NW Okie, a 1966 graduated, it will have been 49 years ago. I was shy, young and naive back in my high school days. Growing up the middle child of four daughters in the small, rural community of Northwest, Oklahoma.

Back in the 1960's Rock-n-Roll, 25-cent per gallon gas, hot roads, and dragging the downtown square were the hot items for high schoolers of my era. Sometimes parking at the Dairy Queen and watching everyone else going up and down the highway. We also experienced movies at a Drive-in. We tuned to the Oklahoma City radio channel (KOMA & WKY) in the evenings to hear the rock-n-roll disc-jokey playing our favorite music. Elvis Presley was overtaken by the Beatles during the last few years of my high school days. Then there were the Herman Hermits, Beach boys, etc...

We have experienced many things over those last fifty-plus years. Some might refer to those days as the "Good Ol' Days." Let us hope we have all grown from those life changing experiences of high school, higher education, military experiences and other life experiences for the better of us all.

What is happening in your neck of the woods?

Good Night! Good Luck!
