1900 - Outlaws Work!

It was Monday Afternoon edition of The Albuquerque Daily Citizen, dated 28 May 1900, had the this front page headline: "Outlaws Work!" The subheads read: "Utah Sheriff and Deputy Shot to Death."

Thompson, Utah, May 28 (1900) -- Sheriff Tyler, of Grand county, and Sam Jenkins, a cattle owner, were shot and instantly killed by outlaws on Hill creek, fifty miles north of of Thompson, Utah, on Saturday. Jenkins and Deputy Sheriff Day had been on a hunt for cattle rustlers ever since they killed George Currie, on the 17th of April.

The officers came upon the outlaws' camp unexpectedly. Tyler said, "Hello, boys." Tyler and Jenkins then turned their horses, supposedly with the intention leaving to get assistance. The outlaws shot them through the back, killing them almost instantly. The outlaws shot at Day but missed him. Day started in search of Sheriff Price and posse of seven men, who were about three miles way. They decided it advisable to come in for more assistance.

The bullets used by the outlaws were of the soft-nose variety; where they came out there are holes almost large enough for a man to insert his fist.

Sheriff Howells and posse of ten men came from Salt Lake and Sheriff Alfred and posse from Price. A large expedition left Thompson, Utah that morning in pursuit of the outlaws.
