Sometimes when you are catching up with your medical after getting insurance, little things arise that might spark a bit of anxiety. One of those little things was an overdue mammogram a few weeks ago that showed some calcifications in right breast.
It was around the first week of September I finally had the digital mammogram. A small cyst showed up in the right breast. So we did an ultrasound a few days later to get a better look at what it might or could be. That showed some calcifications in right breast, which could be cancerous. The ultrasound lead to the stereotactic fine needle biopsy, which determined that it was the Ductol carcinoma "in situ" (DCIS). DCIS forms in the milk ducts and is the most common type of "in situ" carcinoma. "In situ" means "contained in its original place."
I just consulted with surgeon concerning the pathology report of the fine needle biopsy, and scheduled for a MRI in a week to get a better picture of the breast area. There may be a "Sentinel lymph node" biopsy down the road to make sure it has not spread to the first nodes under the arms. But first lets see what the MRI shows, and then go from there.
If you go online to MD Anderson Cancer website, they have all sorts of links to the different types of "breast cancers" that can be very helpful for those diagnosed with cancer. It does not have to be scary when you get that first diagnosis, and it is always good to get a second opinion.
Don't be afraid to get a mammogram. If you don't have insurance or can't afford a mammogram, there are most clinics that offer free mammogram tests to those who can not afford that expense. If you catch breast cancer early there are more options available to eradicate breast cancer. Have you had your mammogram recently?
